Ryan Mallett, a former NFL and University of Arkansas quarterback, died in a suspected drowning incident on Florida's Gulf Coast. He was 35 years old at the time.

According to Arkansas' Deltaplex News, Mallett was taken from a beach in Destin, Florida, to a nearby hospital following the incident, where he was pronounced dead. Mallett's death was confirmed by officials of the White Hall School District, where he worked. Mallett was the White Hall High School football coach.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Coach Ryan Mallett," the statement says. "Coach Mallett was a well-liked coach and educator." We ask that you consider his family, team, students, other coaches, and the White Hall School District staff in your prayers.

In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office confirmed the cause of Mallett's death.

"A tourist died in an apparent drowning off the coast of Gulf Shore Drive in Destin," according to the statement. "A group of people were reportedly struggling offshore when a man drowned." When lifeguards discovered him, he was not breathing. Unfortunately, life-saving procedures were not successful.

After his next of kin was alerted, OCSO determined the guy listed as "a tourist" was Mallett. Mallett's death comes on the heels of 11 documented deaths due to rip currents around the Gulf Coast in recent weeks.

Mallett began his undergraduate career as a freshman at Michigan before transferring to Arkansas for two seasons. The New England Patriots selected him in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draught. He spent seven seasons in the NFL, mostly with the New England Patriots, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens.

Mallett, a native of Batesville, Arkansas, was one of the top high school quarterbacks in the state's history. He committed to Michigan and appeared in 11 games as a freshman backup to Chad Henne. After Michigan coach Lloyd Carr retired, he transferred to Arkansas and played as a sophomore and junior for the Razorbacks. He declared for the NFL draught following his junior season.

Mallett saw limited action as a backup to Tom Brady before being dealt to the Texans in 2014. He appeared in nine games for the Texas Rangers, including six starts, before being released midseason in 2015. He then signed with the Ravens, where he appeared in eight games, including two starts, in 2017.

In 2022, he was hired as White Hall's football coach.

The Football World responds to the loss of Ryan Mallett.

Friends, teammates, opponents, and organisations from Mallett's football career expressed their condolences following his passing.
